Help! I'm researching a friend's family. Looking for the ancestors of Thomas William Jobling, born in 1880 in the Stockton on Tees Workhouse (Co. Durham, England)- Father = William Jobling (b.1860, location unknown); Mother = Eliza ? Mother and baby show on the 1881 census at the S on T Workhouse but surname given is Jobling. The baby was born in 1880 (1 year old in the census) but I would assume that either the couple did not marry and Eliza gave her son's father's name for appearances or, it was a shotgun wedding and the mother was abandoned. Can't identify the father in any subsequent search. I suspect that there was no wedding, as I can't find any marriage record. Thomas William, the son, married Louisa Bignell Notman of South Shields, Co.Durham, His son, Joseph Schofield Jobling, emigrated to New Zealand. I live in NZ so it is a bit difficult getting access to original records. Any help would be gratefully received.

You will notice in the 1881 Census they are living in a workhouse because Eliza 21 is a pauper and is single. I'm assuming that she is not a widow.

I did a search on Ancestry for William Jobling and found him in the 1911 Census, born in Monkwearmouth, Durham, England not Stockton. He is a Steam Crane Driver and married to a woman named Jane.

Monkwearmouth is just north of Stockton.
